At The Happy Space, we recognise and respect the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong People of the Kulin Nation as the traditional owners of the land on which we work, and recognise their continuing connection to land, water, and community. We pay our respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and to their Elders, past, present, and emerging. We acknowledge that that sovereignty was never ceded.

The area around Footscray was originally home to the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and the Bunurong peoples of the Kulin Nation for more than 40,000 years. Maribyrnong is an anglicised version of the Aboriginal term 'Mirring-gnay-bir-nong', which translates as 'I can hear a ringtail possum'.
